Ever have that feeling that is a mixture of excitement and slight panic when it comes to packing? Same. I've created a quick check-list to get you started. Whether you're gearing up for a weekend getaway, a month-long adventure abroad or travelling for work, mastering the art of packing can make or break your travel experience. Also let's be honest, we want to make sure you have enough space for some shopping! Fear not, with a few tips and tricks, you'll be packing like a seasoned pro in no time.
1. Make a List, Check it Twice
Before you even think about throwing things into your suitcase, take a moment to jot down a list of essentials. Start with the basics like clothes, toiletries, and electronics, then add any specific items you'll need for your destination or activities. Trust me, a list will help you stay organized and ensure you don't forget anything important. I always start with undies, jeans, jumpers, sneakers...and then we get into the nitty gritty.
2. Roll, Don't Fold
This age-old packing hack is a game-changer. Instead of folding your clothes, roll them up tightly. I learnt this the hard way. It saved me so much space during my trips to and from Malaysia. It also helps if you are a last-minute packer! Not only does this save space, but it also helps prevent wrinkles. Plus, you can fit more into your suitcase when you roll, leaving extra room for souvenirs on the way back.
3. Maximize Space with Packing Cubes
If you haven't discovered the magic of packing cubes yet, prepare to be amazed. These handy organizers help compartmentalize your belongings, keeping everything neat and tidy throughout your trip. Invest in compression packing cubes to save even more space, allowing you to pack more efficiently. I bought these for my 3 month trip to Asia and South America - I could easily separate my swimmers to my hiking gear, and kept me so organised throughout the back to back travel days. They're also great for separating clean clothes from dirty ones or keeping accessories organized.
4. Choose Versatile Pieces When it comes to clothing, less is more. Opt for versatile pieces that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits. Stick to a colour scheme to make coordination a breeze, and don't forget to pack layers for unpredictable weather. I love wearing colour, so had a few stand out co-ord pieces during my 3-month stint, that I could easily wear together or mix and match. It basically doubled the amount of outfits I had!
5. Tote bag My recent love for tote bags has come from the day when you have your purse or cross-body but need a little more space, for a notebook or towel or some shopping?
This might not be needed for every holiday, but a microfibre towel is a MUST, for a long trip or for hot weather trips where you might be heading to the beach. They are light-weight, easy to pack in your bag and come in handy, all the time!
7. Miniaturize Your Toiletries
Say goodbye to bulky bottles and hello to travel-sized toiletries. Invest in small containers or pick up travel-sized versions of your favourite products. Not only will this save space in your luggage, but it'll also lighten your load, making it easier to navigate airports and train stations. You can always buy shampoo and conditioner on the way, is my motto. I love these toiletry bottles, they have a great range of sizes and styles depending on your skincare - and they don't leak!
8. Pack Smart Electronics
In today's digital age, it's essential to travel with your gadgets. But hauling around a tangle of cords and chargers can be a hassle. Invest in a compact electronics organizer to keep everything neat and accessible. Honestly, you don't need anything too fancy here - I'd go with something like this, it keeps everything together and is compact (and affordable too!). And don't forget to pack a portable charger to keep your devices juiced up on the go. I've linked this in my hand-carry essentials, but here is the link too.
9. Spare Bags for Shoes and Dirty Laundry Keep your shoes separate from your clothes by packing them in dedicated shoe bags or shower caps to protect your clothing from dirt and grime. Additionally, consider bringing a spare lightweight bag for dirty laundry to keep your clean clothes smelling fresh throughout your trip. Remember that bag of bags you have in the corner, use some of these and recycle at the same time!
10. All in one power adaptor Couldn't recommend this one enough, this power adaptor works in any plug point...anywhere. It's super convenient and also comes with some USB slots as well. If you are like me and love to re-charge everything...all at once.
10. Don't Forget the Essentials Last but certainly not least, don't forget to pack the essentials. Passport, tickets, money, medications – these are the things you absolutely can't afford to leave behind. Double-check that you have everything before you zip up your suitcase and head out the door. Have a look at my hand-carry essentials check-list for tips on what to pack.
